The Finnish Egyptological Society

Founded in 1969 by professor Rostislav Holthoer (1937-1997), the Finnish Egyptological Society promotes Finnish Egyptology and the knowledge of ancient Egyptian culture by providing expertise and financial support in this field of study. The society is committed to arranging monthly lectures on various themes in Egyptology as well as organising exhibitions in Finland and guided tours to Egypt and Egyptological collections around the world.

The society is in charge of a number of publications, such as its bi-annual newsletter and various study materials on Egyptology in Finnish. The scholarly literature purchased by the society is placed in the Library of the University of Helsinki (Kaisa house, Fabianinkatu 30), with the purpose of promoting studies on the field. The society manages also an extensive Egyptological slide collection belonging to the scholarly remains left by professor Holthoer. The society also manages the scholarly estate left by Dr Jaana Toivari-Viitala. The ancient Egyptian artefacts owned by the society were last on display in Egypt! exhibition at the Loviisa museum (15.5.-13.9.2009).

The Finnish Egyptological Society is a member of the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies.

At the moment, the society has about 500 members. Annual membership fee is € 25, for students € 10. For further information, please contact the Secretary of the Finnish Egyptological Society at toimisto@egyptologinenseura.fi.
