Information for Speakers

Speakers are not required to pay any fees. Lodging including breakfast and lunch will be provided for from the 23rd or the 24th (depending on your date of arrival) to the 28th of June 2009. Unfortunately we are not able to pay for travel expenses. You will find more information about your accommodation here. The trip to Loviisa town on the 27th of June will be covered for by the conference. Please let us know by e-mail (patricia.berg@helsinki.fi) if you will not be able to attend some of the programme during the evenings, i.e. the Presentation of the Institute and the Reception at the University, or on Saturday the 27th (see programme). Please also let us know if you have a special diet that should be taken into consideration.

Paper


The duration of each paper should be 30 min. after which there will be 15 min. time for questions and discussion. The presentation can be given in English, German or French. The deadline for abstracts was the 11th of January 2009, and no more papers will be accepted.

Speakers will be able to offer their presentations in digital PowerPoint presentations and Overhead transparencies. If you have other formats (such as photographic slides, audio, or video), please discuss this initially with the conference organisers, to check if suitable equipment can be made available. If you are using any hieroglyphic fonts or transliteration fonts please ensure that you have embedded them in PowerPoint, in case the hieroglyph programs are not available on the presentation equipment.

Arrival in Helsinki


The Helsinki-Vantaa airport is located 20 km from the centre of Helsinki. The average driving time to the centre is 30 min. There is a regular airport bus, Finnair City Bus, running every 20 min. between the airport and the city centre. Local bus numbers 615 is also available, running about every 10 min. Taxis are available outside the Terminal, to the centre of Helsinki the fee is around 30 Euros.

The hostels wish to have the speakers’ estimated time of arrival and departure. Please send the dates and times by e-mail to patricia.berg@helsinki.fi before the 15th of June 2009 or preferably as soon as you have booked your flights. Both buses (Finnair City Bus and number 615) from the airport have their terminal point at the railway station in the centre of Helsinki. From there you can walk or take the tram to your hostel. All three hostel are within walking distance from the railway station (max. 15 min).

Due to the small amount of rooms in each hostel, accommodation for the speakers has been divided between three different hostels.

The University’s Guest house is situated on Vironkatu 1 (see map) in Kruunuhaka district. The reception desk is open on weekdays from 7.30 to 16.00 and on weekends from 8.00 to 13.00. During other hours it is necessary to know the code to the front door in order to get in. The code will be sent to you by e-mail some days before arrival. The same code can be used for both the gate and the front door. If you arrive after the reception has closed, you can find the number of your room on the bulletin board in the entrance hall. In this case, the key to your room will be in the door. Breakfast is served on the second floor on weekdays from 7.30 to 10.00 and on Sundays from 8.30 to 10.30. Tieteiden talo, where the conference takes place, is a couple of blocks from the University Guest House. To the centre of Helsinki it is a 10 min. walk.

The Guest House of the Academy of Finland is situated on Mariankatu 14 (see map) in Kruunuhaka district. It is managed by the University’s Guest House on Vironkatu 1 (see map) and thus the reception desk is situated in that building. When you arrive, go first to the University’s Guest House in order to get your room number and key and then to the Guest House of the Academy of Finland. The buildings are only one block away from each other. The reception desk in the University’s Guest House is open on weekdays from 7.30 to 16.00 and on weekends from 8.00 to 13.00. During other hours it is necessary to know the code to the front door in order to get in. The code will be sent to you by e-mail some days before arrival. The same code can be used for both the gate and the front door. If you arrive after the reception has closed, you can find the number and key to your room in an envelope attached to the door of the reception on the second floor. Breakfast is served in the University’s Guest House on weekdays from 7.30 to 10.00 and on Sundays from 8.30 to 10.30. Tieteiden talo, where the conference takes place, is one block away from the Guest House of the Academy of Finland. To the centre of Helsinki it is a 10 min. walk.

Kongressikoti is situated on Snellmaninkatu 15 A (see map) in Kruunuhaka district. All customers are equipped with an own key to the premises upon arrival. Rooms includes TV, washbasin and refrigerator. Unfortunately there are no breakfast service at the hostel, but the speakers living in Kongressikoti will be given the opportunity to have breakfast in Tiedekahvila – a cafeteria on the ground floor in Tieteiden talo, the same building where the conference takes place. You will upon arrival get breakfast coupons that should be presented at the cafeteria each morning. In Kongresskoti there is a fully equipped but small common kitchen that is cleaned daily, as well as the common showers and toilets. Washing machine is free of charge and there is the possibility to have an Internet connection via a secured Wlan connection, the cost is 5 Euros for the whole stay. Tieteiden talo, where the conference takes place, is a couple of blocks from the Kongressikoti. To the centre of Helsinki it is a 10 min. walk.

Hostel Satakunta

Hostel Satakuntatalo is situated on Lapinrinne 1 A (see map) in Kamppi district, in the centre of Helsinki. All the rooms are equipped with phone, fridge and a balcony. Showers and toilets are shared within 3–6 rooms. The reception on the 1st floor is open 24 h and offers several services such as lockers and internet terminals. The self service laundry and the common kitchen are in the guests use. The breakfast is from 7.00 to 10.00 every morning and in the evenings the guests are welcome to use the common sauna. Tieteiden talo, where the conference takes place, is a about 20 min. walk from Hostel Satakunta. Other possibilities are metro (get on at Kamppi metro station, go east, and get off at Kaisaniemi, from Kaisaniemi metro station it is a 5–10 min. walk to Tieteiden talo) or tram (tram nr 3T in direction centre, get on at Fredrikinkatu and off at the last stop on Aleksanterinkatu).
